31 Jan 2013 - AGM 2012 - SECRETARY'S REPORT

The following titles were won in 2012:
Under 12 won the Division 4
Under 14 won the Division 1 Shield
Under 16 won the Division 1 title
Senior Team won the Senior League, Championship
and Munster B Club Championship.
A total of 53 matches were played by all teams in
2012, Under 12 played 17, Under 14 played 15, the
U16 and Minors played 5 each, the seniors played
11 matches.
Under 10 From January to March indoor training
took place in St Flannans Hall and in March moved
to the Banner GAA Pitch. Blitzes were
attended in Kilrush, Fergus Rovers and Doora
Barefield during the year; the club also hosted a
blitz in June, which was a great success. Thanks
to David Casey, Martin Meehan, Noeleen Fitzgerald,
Lorraine Kirwan and Ita Mahony for their
commitment and dedication with this group of
players.
Training resumed in September. At the moment
we have 16 girls in this age group for 2013
training in St Flannans. Marin is now a mentor to
the U12 and David has started a college course in
Maynooth and has taken a break, the club wishes
David every success in this and hopefully once
this is completed he can return as a mentor to
this group. While Ita and Noeleen are still
helping with this group, David and Martin haven’t
been replaced. Joe and I with help from the senior
players are looking after this group at the
moment. As this is the future of the club it’s
most important that mentors are put in place.
Thanks to Louise Henchy for arranging the weekly
training rota of senior players without this we
would not be able to cater for this group.
Under 12 A trained in St Flannans from January to
March and then moved to the Banner pitch. As we
had two teams entered in competitions, the 1st
team were entered in the Mid Clare Regional
Championship where they reached the final, losing
to Fergus Rovers in the final by a point. By
reaching the final we were in
Division 1 of the championship, after the group
matches we made the shield final, again heart
break for these girls as they again lost the final
by a point to Cooraclare. Our second team competed
in the North Clare Regional Championship and
Division 4 championship, where they were very
successful in winning the division by beating
Kilrush in the final. Thanks to Joe Ryan, Gerry
Keane, Colm Clancy, Mary Holland. Catherine Kelly
and Ann Corbett for looking after these teams. Joe
and Jerry are now with the 2013 U14 in Lees Road,
and the current mentors with the U12 in St
Flannans are Colm Clancy, Martin Meehan, Vinny
Talty and Jim Dunne. Ita organises a parent to
also remain during these training sessions.
Under 14 this group started training in October
2011 in Lees Road and didn’t get a break until the
11th of October 2012 when they played the Shield
Final. Beating Doora Barefield in the Div 1 Shield
was just reward to the commitment and dedication
of the players and mentors. The A panel took part
in the Clare Féile in April winning through to the
semi-final by beating Doora Barefield and Éire Óg.
In the semi-final the eventual winner Kilmurry
Ibricken beat us. Two teams enter in the
championship in Div 1 and Div 4 and as stated
earlier we won the Div 1 Shield. Thanks to Vinny
Talty, Aidan Leonard and Martina Martin for all
the work with this team from October 2011 to
October 2012. Vinny is now a mentor with the U12,
with Aidan and Martina remaining with the U14
where they have been joined by Joe, Gerry, Mary,
Catherine and Ann. As ye may know Vinny broke a
bone in his foot while club training with KIB last
June and still remained and gave total commitment
to the girls. Vinny is still experience a problem
with this injury and only last Thursday had an
operation on his foot and we wish him a speedy
recovery.
The U16 team captured the Division 1 title by
beating West Clare Gaels in the final played in
Cooraclare on the 20th of May. They had 5 matches
in this competition and won them all, most of this
team are also available to play at U16 again this
year. Well done to Martin Nolan and Emma
O’Driscoll the management of this team.
The U18’s also played 5 matches in Division 1
where they reached the semi-final, which they lost
to Burren Gaels by 1 point after a great game
played in blustery condition in Corofin. As with
the U16 nearly all this team are also available
again in 2013. Thanks to Martin Nolan and JJ O’Dea
for taking care of these players.
Another great year for the Senior Team, who
captured the league and championship titles, for
the second year running and then went on to win
the Munster Senior B Club Championship for the 1st
time. For the second year running we were again
beaten in the All Ireland 7 final at the Naomh
Mearóg grounds in Dublin. The team remained
unbeaten in the county during 2012 winning the
Senior League in May when beating West Clare Gaels
in the final in Kilmihil. In Milltown on the 16th
of September they beat Cooraclare in the
championship final. Then as we thought it was on
to play the Kerry champions in the Munster Club B
semi-final on the 13th of October. As Kerry were
in the All Ireland Final on the 7th of October
their county final wasn’t played until the 10th
with Sliabh Liuchra winning it. As they were then
due to play us in 3 days they refused claiming
that it was too much to ask players to play 3
times in 7 days. Following a Munster Council
meeting attended by Joe and JJ this game was
awarded to the Banner and Sliabh Liuchra removed
from the competition. We were then due to play
Ballymacarbry from Waterford in the final the
following week. Sliabh Liuchra then appealed the
Munster Council decision to Central Council and
following a meeting again attended by Joe and JJ
in Tullamore the council upheld the Munster
council decision. We were then free to play
Ballymacarbry in the final, which was played on
Sunday the 4th of November in the Staker Wallace
grounds in Limerick. What a night for the girls as
they went on to win their 1st Munster B Club
Championship. The following Friday we played Inch
Rovers from Cork in the Munster final at the same
venue. On the night we were beaten by much
stronger outfit but the more we play at this level
the stronger we will get. October saw some of the
panel travel to Dublin to compete in the All
Ireland Senior Sevens in Portmarnock. After a
great day football in which all the players gave
of their best we reached the final and were
unlucky to lose to Donaghamoyne from Monaghan.
Thanks to Maelisa Malone for travelling as
supervisor to the under 18 players over the
weekend. Thanks to the mentors of Joe Reidy, JJ
O’Dea, Pat Crotty and Martin Nolan also Louise
Henchy for contacting the players during the year
to inform them of all matches and training.

train teams attend matches and looked after all
the girls.

To everyone who supported our fundraising projects
during the year, also a special word of thanks to
Barry Lynch’s Centra, Gort Road for his generous
sponsorship during the year. To Henchy’s Daybreak,

Senior County Final, programme.
To the players who gave of their time both on the
field of play, training and helping out with club
activities during the year.
To St Flannans College and John Minogue for the
use of their hall for indoor training and the use
of their pitches for some matches.
To the Banner GAA Club for the use of their
pitches both for training and matches in 2012.
Here tonight we remember especially Maura Cavanagh
committee member and former Registrar of the club
who passed away earlier this year. Maura gave
great service to the Banner Ladies and her
untimely passing in February after a long illness
was a very sad occasion for all that knew her and
the invaluable contribution she has made to the
success of the club. Our sympathy is extended to
Maura’s husband Joe son John and daughter Aoife
and Niamh. I would like to thank everyone that
made themselves available for the guard of honour
that took place on the day of the funeral. We also
extend sympathy to Mary Holland on the death of
her father and the O’Dea family on the death of
JJ’s father also to the Cavanagh family again on
the death of Maura’s father.
Finally on a personal note, I wish to thank you
all for your support as Club Secretary during the
year. To Joe, Ita, a special word of thanks for
all the help and assistance that you provided to
me in 2012.
