29 Jul 2009 - GAA - Munster U21HC: Banner end long wait

The big corner forward bagged 2-2 as the Banner finally tasted provincial glory in the grade after losing 12 previous finals, including last year's to Tipperary. While John Minogue's side were full value for their win, it was only in the dying minutes that they sealed their historic success when Honan hammered home his second goal to give them a four-point cushion.

Wing forward Cormac O'Donovan added an insurance point soon after to set up an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Galway next month.

Waterford settled quickest and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after four minutes. After spurning two goal scoring opportunities, they eventually found the net in the 13th minute through corner forward Tomas Ryan which gave them a 1-3 to 0-3 lead.

But with midfielder Nicky O'Connell, Cormac O'Donovan and senior star Colin Ryan in fine scoring form, the Banner rallied in the second quarter to take a 0-11 to 1-5 advantage into the break.

Clare extended their lead straight after the restart when a Caimin Morey point was followed moments later by Honan's first goal which made it 1-12 to 1-5.

Waterford, to their credit, responded with points from Maurice Shanahan, Shane Casey and a mighty one from a free by goalkeeper Adrian Power before Casey netted to leave the minimum in it after 45 minutes.

When John Gorman tied up the scoring at 1-14 to 2-11 with 10 minutes remaining, it paved the way for a grandstand finish, but Clare finished the stronger with O'Donovan and Ryan both slotting over frees before Honan's 58th minute major finally settled the issue.
