Banner Ladies 5-18 Cooraclare 1-11(Clare Senior League 2010)

Date: 5 Apr 2010
Time: 4 pm
Venue: Coorclare
Round two of the Clare Senior Ladies Football League between Banner Ladies and Cooraclare was played under very wintery conditions in Cooraclare last Easter Monday. Five of the Banner girls travelled to West Clare straight off the back of a significant win for Clare over the Kingdom on their home turf in the first round of the Munster Minor Championship, last Saturday.

Cooraclare made skilful use of a strong first half wind advantage, floating over five curving points by the end of the first quarter. While the Banner did find it difficult to move the ball up-field in the first quarter, points by Niamh Keane, Niamh O’Dea and Sonya Maher and a well placed goal from U16 Intercounty player Orlaith Lynch edged them ahead by a point at the same stage. With the Banner half-back line and mid-field finding the measure of their opponents and the elements, incursions were rebuffed, forcing some long kicking by Cooraclare with no reward. By the half time whistle Orlaith Lynch and Becky Coughlan had rattled the net again for the Banner aided by unrelenting distribution from Niamh Keane and Niamh O’Dea who themselves had added two points each to the tally. Although Cooraclare’s Annmarie Callinan added a lovely goal and a point in the second quarter, the West Clare side failed to capitalise on a strong wind advantage and the first half closed with a score of 3-7 to 1-8 in favour of the townies.

Now with their backs to the wind, the Banner Ladies played a tight passing game in the second half, giving away very little ball. With a characteristically high work rate the Banner Ladies launched wave after wave of attack to dominate the third quarter, with the two Niamhs, Sonya Maher and Orlaith Lynch scoring a goal and eight points between them without reply.

A fourth quarter revival driven by Cooraclare’s powerhouse Eithne Morrissey, saw Annmarie Callinan take credit for two of their three unanswered points. However, when the Banner’s Michele Delaney threaded a pinpoint footpass out of the backs to Sonya Maher for probably the point of the game, it signalled the start of the last passage of play that saw Niamh Keane lay off a lovely ball to Orlaith Lynch for a well taken goal and a beautiful point from Emma Glynn in the dying minutes of the game.

Banner Ladies manager, Kevin Greene will be pleased with the way his team have embraced the newest additions to the squad to form partnerships that are already yielding dividends.
